Cora Weiss (b.2000) is a multi-disciplinary artist exploring image production and compilation, and their use for atmosphere construction in paint, print and photography. Awarded the MFA with Distinction from the Glasgow School of Art (2022-24), she also holds a BA in Fine Art (First Class) from Newcastle University (2018-2022). Most recent shows include Chaos Reigns at David Dale Gallery Warehouse, Swatched x Blush at the Pipe Factory, and HFBK x GSA at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg.
Weiss creates curated melodies of image-beats, presenting translations across media that comment on our growing insensitivities to reading images, in a world of overload and decontextualised fragments. Driven by her music playlists, Weiss compiles, orders and recontextualises references from digital sources such as anime, social media, YouTube, archival photographs and prints of historic architecture. In creative dialogue with Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas (1924-29, which traced motifs through the Italian Renaissance and beyond), she explores the desire to see all at once in her current project <TEMPO!>.Here she traces links between time, style and referencing. It uses ideas from music production (sampling, remixing, arranging, mastering) to structure relationships between images, exploring the shifting landscape of media that the artist feels compelled to consume, express and evaluate.
Weiss is concerned with different modes of image-making and value-attaching, and how these allow us to see the world and its media afresh.
